Sourcing & Processing

Ethiopia is commonly recognized as the birthplace of coffee, so it's no surprise that coffee plants, both wild and cultivated, flourish in its lush high elevation regions. The nutrient rich soil and moderate wet and dry seasons support a vast genetic diversity of varietals, referred to as landrace or heirloom. This natural heterogeneity produces truly unique and delicious coffees.

Uraga is a mountainous and heavily forested district (woreda) within the Guji Zone of southern Ethiopia. It is known for its high-altitude terrain and fertile, volcanic soil. The tropical highland climate produces optimal conditions for coffee cultivation and allows for a long growing season.

This coffee was produced by Mehbuba Seid Abdella. Mehbuba and her husband Hayatudin Jemal Ibrahim have years of coffee growing and operations experience between them. Their farm in Guji Uraga produces fantastic coffees year after year.

Mehbuba is a member of the Ethiopian chapter of the International Women's Coffee Alliance and co-owns the Himma Manufacturing PLC with her husband. Their company owns and operates a washing station, processing their own coffee cherries along with cherries from numerous small farms in their region. These family farms are traditionally intercropped and organic-by-default. Most of the work is done manually by the farmer and their family.

Mehbuba's coffee was brought to us by Artisan Coffee Imports. Artisan partners directly with farmers producing top-quality specialty lots, making them completely traceable
