Sourcing & Processing

This carefully crafted natural blend comes to us from Minas Gerais, a large inland estado in the mineral-rich highlands of southeastern Brazil. It was sourced exclusively from small farms, or sitios, located in the unique micro-regions of Machado, Poco Fundo, and Campestre. While most coffee in Brazil is grown on large commercial plantations with the focus on quantity, the Legender blend is produced on family-run sitios that are passionate about quality, harvesting practices, and drying methods.

All lots are purchased directly from the farmers and carefully sorted. Only the top quality beans are selected. All of the farmers are required to provide detailed information and transparency about their sitios and production processes. These small farms maintain traditional growing methods that often incorporate shade trees and diverse crop integration.

Coffee cherries are harvested by each individual farm when perfectly ripe. For the natural process, the cherries are spread out on patios to dry in the sun with their skin and mucilage in-tact. This lot was carefully sorted to include only top quality peaberries.

A peaberry is a natural mutation that occurs in 5–12% of all coffee grown. Normally coffee beans grow two to a cherry, flat against each other. Instead, a peaberry grows as a single seed inside the cherry and tends to be rounder, smaller, and denser than a typical bean. Known to be intensely sweet and flavorful, peaberries are highly sought-after for both their unique flavors and relative rarity.

ABOUT THE DESIGN | From our primary designer, Susan Lau:

"The design is inspired by a combination of the Namoradeira or traditional window decorations of Minas Gerais and the artwork of graffiti artist/illustrator Rogerio Fernandez from the same region.

The Namoradeira is a typical ornament from Minas Gerais, of a woman with one arm crossed in front of her and the palm of her other hand resting on her cheek as she stares wistfully into the distance. ( I swapped the wistful demeanor to one of a happy coffee lover!). The ornament is often found on balconies or windowsills, and comes in different sizes and made from different materials, such as wood or ceramics. The Namoradeiras that decorate many of the windowsills in Minas Gerais."

The flat bottom of this handy brewer is the key to making a consistently delicious cup, forcing water to reach all crevices of the ground coffee and developing a richer flavor along the way.
