Sourcing & Processing

This carefully selected peaberry lot was grown on Mount Kilimanjaro's highland plateaus in northern Tanzania. The area around Kilimanjaro enjoys numerous advantages from the world’s largest free standing mountain. It’s volcanic mineral rich soils are some of the most fertile in Africa and are perfect for growing specialty coffee. Reaching almost 6,000 meters into the sky, the mountain creates unique weather conditions and the abundant rain and snow melt is directed to the farms via a sophisticated system of furrows.

Lyamungo is one of four individually managed farms that make up the African Plantations Kilimanjaro (APK) estate. Located near the equator, the estate enjoy steady year- round sun and consistent growing seasons allowing APK to use solar power as a source of electricity on all of their farms. "Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Not only does it protect the environment that is essential to our coffee, it guarantees economic stability and social support to the communities that depend on our farms. In a region where electricity is sporadic at best, our solar system has eliminated downtime and increased efficiency." (APK)

APK puts the welfare of its workers above all else and the community focus can be seen on all of their farms. They work closely with the local co-ops and always strive to put locals in leadership roles. The APK foundation supports the health and education of the communities around the farms by providing medical clinics and food for local schools.

This washed lot is made up entirely of peaberries, a natural mutation that occurs in 5–12% of all coffee grown. Normally coffee beans grow two to a cherry, flat against each other. Instead, a peaberry grows as a single seed inside the cherry and tends to be rounder, smaller, and denser than the typical beans. Known to be intensely sweet and flavorful, peaberries are highly sought- after for both their unique flavors and relative rarity.

This coffee was hand-planted, hand-picked, and hand-processed while being constantly overseen by quality control specialists. It was dried on raised beds and the moisture was carefully hand monitored to ensure even drying.
