Rwanda Agaseke Washed
$27.50
Named after traditional Rwandan Peace Baskets, or Agaseke, this coffee was produced by a collective of women farmers located near Lake Kivu in the highlands of Rwanda. A sweetly spicy aroma of oatmeal raisin cookie leads into notes of jasmine tea and ruby red grapefruit, balanced by creamy cashew. This coffee comes to us from the lush volcanic highlands of Karongi in the Western Province of Rwanda. It was grown by a collective of women farmers, the Agaseke group, along the beautiful shores of Lake Kivu. Agaseke, a subgroup of the Kopakaki Cooperative, has over 250 female members and its numbers are growing. To become a member, a farmer has to meet and maintain strict quality control standards. Their coffee trees have to be carefully cultivated and kept in top health.
Farmers pick their own coffee by hand and deliver it to Kopakaki's washing station. The coffee is sorted, pulped, and dry fermented for two days. It is then rinsed and soaked for an additional 24 hours. The coffee is carefully hand inspected before being moved to raised beds to dry in the sun for 10-15 days.
Agaseke, also known as Peace Baskets, are traditional Rwandan pointed top baskets, customarily weaved by women. Their carefully created decorations have deep cultural meaning and express a wife or mother's dedication to her family. The baskets are used to hold food and other gifts given to friends and family. They symbolize peace and goodwill within the community.
