8 oz. Tin — $24
This coffee was grown by the Falla family on their farm near Antigua, in the lush volcanic mountains of central Guatemala. Bright and complex, the cup has notes of fresh strawberry and lemon balm balanced with a lovely nutty flavor, a refreshing grapefruit acidity, and a dry chardonnay finish. The whole bean coffee is valve sealed to retain peak freshness and flavor. The decorative holiday can is 100% curbside recyclable or better yet, endlessly reusable!
Tasting Notes
Finca El Tempixque is located near the city of Antigua in the central highlands of Sacatepéquez, Guatemala. Famous for its coffee history and Barouque-influenced architecture, Antigua is a designated UNESCO World Hertiage Site. Coffee from almost anywhere in the Sacatepéquez department is known simply as Antigua. This mountainous area is rich in volcanic soil and boasts endless combinations of microclimates, elevations and varietals.
The Falla family has been growing coffee in the Antigua valley since 1890. In the 1960s Arturo Fall Cofiño purchased an additional 100 hectare neighboring plot of land and named it “El Tempixque” after the tempisque tree that stood at the front gate. The farm is organized by “tablón”, or plot, which are each planted with a single varietal, evenly shaded by grevillea trees, and bordered with macadamia trees.
El Tempixque is currently run by Arturo's son Estuardo Falla. In the past 30 years, he has modernized all aspects of the operation. The farm now has a wet and dry mill and a family-run export company. The Falla family mills and exports coffee for small farmers from all around the region. All of the coffee they export is Rainforest Alliance Certified.
Adrian and Sebastian, part of the newest generation of the Falla family, are together innovating new and unique small-scale processing techniques, opening up new global markets for their coffees. They also help manage the Arturo Falla Confiño Association, which provides education, medical care, and dental services to El Tempixque’s 160 employees, as well as to more than 500 small coffee producers in Antigua.
This full natural coffee was shade grown in a traceable lot. The cherries were carefully hand-picked when perfectly ripe. They were first dried in the sun, then moved to mechanical dryers. This process enhances the flavors of the nutrient-rich soil resulting in a bright and complex cup.
